Chapter 14

I wasn’t entirely certain how long I had slept, but the moon was still high in the sky when I checked the pocket watch on my writing desk. It had been three hours since I had left Mr. Delamar in the music room.

With a groan, I climbed out of bed and stepped into my gown with the most simply fasteners in the front. I couldn’t call for Helen to help me dress, and I certainly couldn’t sneak to the kitchens in my nightclothes with Mr. Delamar. I left my hair in the braid that Helen had tied it in, slipped my feet into a pair of stockings, and made my way down the corridor. My candle was burning dim, so I walked with careful steps to ensure it didn’t go out.

Withdrawing my key, I unlocked the music room door. My stomach twisted with nervousness as I walked into the dark room. Again, the doubt crossed my mind that Mr. Delamar could be trusted. Was this some sort of ambush? My heart crept to my throat, and I could feel my pulse in my neck.

A light snore carried over to my side of the room. The light of my candle picked up just a faint outline of Mr. Delamar where he was lying on his bed. I walked toward him, careful not to make any sound. His face was mashed into the pillow, one of his eyes completely swallowed up in it, mouth hanging agape as he snored. It was something of a comfort to know that he was not always the picture of perfection.

I tapped his shoulder. He didn’t move.

I gave it a shake, progressing to a tight squeeze of his upper arm. “Mr. Delamar,” I said in a loud whisper.

He still snored, as if it would take a pile of horse droppings on his face to wake him.

I shook his arm again. “Mr. Delamar.”

Nothing.

“Sidney!” My harsh whisper of his Christian name was the only thing to bring him to his senses. He sat up instantly, letting out a snort.

I stared at him, eyes wide. “I am surprised you haven’t been discovered here yet with such a snore.”

He rubbed his eyes, opening just one to look up at me. “I do not snore.”

“Yes, you do. I have just been a witness.”

He raked a hand over his hair, swinging his legs out of his blankets. “Is snoring a symptom of arsenic poisoning? If your cook poisoned my dinner, then that would be the only reason I have developed such a strange habit.” He threw me a teasing smile, and I tried not to think about how many favors the candlelight was doing him.

“I’m afraid not. It is only a symptom of being entirely too pompous to admit that you have a flaw.”

“Only one flaw?” Mr. Delamar raised an eyebrow. “I will take that as a compliment.”

I opened my mouth to protest, but thought better of it. It wasn’t wise to insult the man who was helping to save my life, no matter how tempting it was to see his arrogance falter.
